Tips And Tricks For Shopping
1. Be sure to take a metal or wooden yardstick (not just a 12 inch ruler as it will not be long enough) with you when shopping for headboards. You won’t really be using it to measure so much as a way to check for potential warping problems.
The metal yardsticks work the best but if you don’t happen to have one handy then a wooden one will do.
You place the yardstick along the bottom edges of the headboard and look for highpoints where the stick is teeter tottering ect on one or more high points. Then you also look for gaps between the stick and the headboard to find any low points.
This will hopefully give you a good indication of whether or not your piece has any potential warping issues or not. Once you lock a headboard in with the side rails if it was not properly kiln dried and begins to twist it will simply crack and split as it has no where left to go. This challenge can be avoided to a great extent using this a one of your tools.
2. If you have a really tight hall way or door way be sure to measure the hall or door and take those measurements with you. It sure beats getting home and not being able to get the bed into the room.
3. Take one of your side rail attachments off and take it with you. This may sound goofy but if you’re buying only a headboard this can be critical.
After you have narrowed it down to 1 or two headboards that you really like go out to your car or truck and bring in the connector bracket. Be sure that the tabs that your bracket has match up with the slots in the headboard. It sure save not being able to assemble it once you get it home.
4. Determine the exact stain color of your side rails if you’re keeping them before you go shopping so you can match the headboard. If you do find a headboard you want and it’s not the same stain color then you have 2 options.
A). Refinish the side rails to color match the new bedroom furniture headboards you’re buying. This is really not a big task just to refinish a couple of bedrails.
B) Buy a matching bed skirt that matches your bedspreads and or comforters that you use. You may need to buy a few for the different patterns of bed linens and coverings you have but once again super easy to do.
